However, to really understand it and have the most fun, take a Group or Private Lesson that will bring you quickly up to speed and experience the joy of gliding across snow. Started by Gene Dayton in 1969, The Breckenridge Nordic Center and the Dayton family have been sharing their passion for cross country skiing with the visitors and locals of Breckenridge for 55 years.
From the earliest days of cutting trails and wooden skis, to the modern use of Italian-made Snowcats and state-of-the art snowmaking and ski equipment, the local family operating Breckenridge Nordic Center maintains their passion for the sport, its charm and welcoming atmosphere, and their desire to help people enjoy the winter sport of cross country skiing in Breckenridge.
How it Works
Cross country skis allows you to glide through the woods efficiently on variable snow covered terrain.
We groom and re-groom trails daily to give you the best experience and the most efficient experience when cross country skiing in Breckenridge. For a warm up or as a first timer, start with the easiest beginner trails marked as “green” on the map and move to more intermediate terrain (blue trails) as your balance and skill progress. Our advanced “black” terrain is sure to thrill even the most experienced skiers.

If they can walk, they can learn to glide and ski! Children often pick it up very quickly. Snowshoeing will be a simple, new task for them as well. Just remember, young children can tire quickly when trying something new. Start with a short easy trail and know you can always turn around if the trail is too long. Hot chocolate upon your return to our warm lodge is always a great motivator.
Most people tend to overheat while cross country skiing and snowshoeing, so a few light layers are better than one heavy insulated layer. That way you can shed layers if you get too warm. Always avoid cotton, as it holds moisture. If you are used to downhill skiing, dress a little lighter since you won’t be sitting on a windy lift. Our pro shop carries high quality brands and everything you might need for your adventure including hats, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, socks, jackets, pants and water bottles. Our expert staff can also help you choose from our massive selection of new and used skis, boots poles and snowshoes should you wish to own your own gear.
